Torzhok – the earliesr Russian city – sets tourist infrastructure
Torzhok – is a district center of the Tver region, one of the earliest cities of the Upper Volga. It is mentioned in Russian chronicles since 1139 under the name Novy Torg. The city is picturesquely located on the Tverets river – the Volga feeder, on the federal route Moscow - Saint Petersburg. Hence to Tver - 60 km, to Moscow - 236 km. Through Torzhok passes a spur of October railroad to Rzhev, Likhoslavl, Ostashkov. Torzhok is located on the way to Seliger where many tourists go. Administration of the city considers that if local tourist infrastructure was developed better people could stay here for a day or two in order to pay attention to the numerous monuments of Torzhok. It is one of 300 cities of Russia having status «The monument of urban development». Besides the ensemble of Boriso-Glebskiy monastery (XI c) the former nobiliary estates which survived in Torzhok environments may present interest for the tourists. The most notable dynasties of Russia – Poltoratskie, Lvovy, Oleniny – owned lands there and invited distinguished architects for building of their estates. Special relations connect Torzhok and great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin. In Yamskaya street the building of hotel remained where the poet repeatedly stayed and museum of A.S. Pushkin is opened in the former Olenins’ estate. The city rightfully enters into tourist route of Puskin ring of the Upper Volga. Furthermore Torzhok is known as a resort-city, Torzhok Info reports. In the former Lvovs’ estate is arranged Mitino sanatorium with healing mineral springs. Torzhok is not less interesting than Suzdal but there is no «tourist product» here attractive for most of people. Some monuments are insufficient, «packing» is necessary including infrastructure, promotion of this direction, - it must become fashionable. Only entire promotion of direction is possible: hotels, roads, and certainly PR. And now situation can change for the better for Torzhok. Russia's first agreement on trust management of historical and architectural monuments was here concluded. Thus experiment started on introduction of a model, very popular in the West - in England, USA and even in Australia, when the responsibility for a specific part of architectural heritage takes upon itself a society in the person of non-governmental organizations like national trusts etc.
